Celebrating the beauty and inner strength of the Chinese woman, from ancient times to the modern, Lily Cai blends traditional Chinese dance with Western ballet and modern dance to create the highly visual performances of the Lily Cai Chinese Dance Company.
The Dynasties and Beyond performance takes the audience on an inventive, artistic journey from the past to the present.
The opening Dynasty Suite is China from the past. The dancers become the performers of ancient Chinese dynasties and rural minorities, gracing the stage with the elegant costumes and dance movement from the past 3000 years of Chinese history.
From the ancient times, the performance brings the audience to the present, blending East and West in a haunting suite performed with lit candles. The Silk Cascade finale transforms the ancient art of Chinese ribbon dance into a vibrant celebration of contemporary movement and color.
Lily Cai hails from Shanghai, China, and was a principal dancer with the Shanghai Opera House Dance Troupe. Her troupe of female Chinese and Chinese-American dancers, based in San Francisco, has toured extensively throughout the country to rave reviews.
