Aiken Performing Arts Group, Inc. and the University of South Carolina - Aiken are proud to announce that The National Symphony Orchestra has accepted the invitation to visit and perform in Aiken at the USC Convocation Center. The National Symphony Orchestra will perform February 15, 2008 at 8:00 p.m.
The National Symphony Orchestra, numbering 110 of the country’s finest musicians, is one of the world’s greatest symphony orchestras. Accompanying the performance will be a range of local educational outreach activities for the benefit of public school and college students. Details of these programs will be announced at a later date when finalized.
Aiken’s visit by the National Symphony Orchestra is a part of the American Residencies Program. The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, located in Washington, DC., accepts one invitation per year to make a State or Region of the Country the focus of Orchestra concerts. South Carolina was chosen for the 2008 Residency. All Proceeds from the concert will be shared by Aiken Performing Arts Group, to further its educational outreach activities and the University of South Carolina Aiken to further its scholarship programs.
In keeping with the National Symphony Orchestra’s commitment to the music of this country, the program for the evening concert will include William Schuman’s Prayer in Time of War. The Overture to Mozart’s The Magic Flute will open the program, followed by Benjamin Briten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. The concert will conclude with Ravel’s orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Programs and artists are subject to change.
